NO ELECTRICITY = NO WATER
Your number one need to sustain life is water. The day could come when no more water will flow when you turn the tap.
How to secure a dependable water source:
- Find out the current water sources in your area.
- Natural sources – creeks, rivers, springs. The problem here is in a mass EMP event this is where everyone in the wide area will be. These water supplies will soon be very polluted and very dangerous, (think an African water hole with the lions on the prowl).
- Wells.
- Most cities have many large wells. These wells are secured and of course run on electricity. Most municipalities with wells do have backup generators which will keep the pumps running until they can’t get any more deliveries of fuel as the trucks who haul the fuel will be out of commission.
- Many rural properties have their own well. It usually consists of a 6 to 8 inch steel casing with about 1 to 2 feet of it protruding from ground level and extending down many feet. The top is covered with a plate which has a pipe and electrical cable going into the well. This cover is holding the pipe, electric cable and a pump.
- Storage basins. Most cities have water towers or large tanks placed at higher elevations to store and produce water pressure. These supplies will not last long if the well pumps are not working. You can keep some 55 gal plastic drums on hand to transport water.
- Create your own water supply
- Cistern. This is way to capture rain water. There are many types and styles of tanks you can set up.
- Hand well pump. If you have access to a well you can insert a hand pump. You have to remove the top cover and extend the hand pump pipe deep enough to reach the water level. The water level can be assessed by using fishing line sinkers and bobber.
- Drive your own well. If your water table is not too far down purchase a well point, galvanized pipe, couplings, and a drive head. Once you have it deep enough use the hand pump.
